Midlands State University (MSU) is seeking a diligent SHE Officer to join the Enterprise Division. As an integral member of our dynamic team, you will be responsible for ensuring the implementation and maintenance of safety, health, and environmental standards across the university.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Formulate and implement safety policies and procedures to ensure compliance with relevant regulations and standards.
  • Compile Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) statistics for review and analysis, identifying areas for improvement.
  • Assist in the review of crucial safety documents, such as risk assessments and incident reports, to recommend necessary revisions.
  • Handle communication with clients and employees, promptly addressing queries or complaints related to safety matters.
  • Procure Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the department, ensuring an adequate supply for all staff members.
  • Review and coordinate risk assessments, registers, incident reports, and audit reports, taking appropriate corrective actions.
  • Organize monthly/departmental (sectional) team meetings to discuss safety-related issues and resolve them effectively.
  • Coordinate audits and inspections to ensure compliance with safety regulations, identifying potential risks and implementing corrective measures.
  • Track and monitor corrective action plans and incident data, providing regular reports to management for review and analysis.
  • Maintain records of all departmental legal appointments, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Plan and conduct safety drills with workplace staff to enhance emergency preparedness and response capabilities.
  • Provide training to workplace personnel on safety procedures, emergency protocols, and the proper use of safety equipment.
  • Develop and update safety manuals, ensuring they reflect current best practices and legal requirements.
  • Coordinate safety training programs and campaigns to raise awareness and promote a safety-conscious culture within the university.
  • Demonstrate honesty, reliability, and excellent communication skills in all interactions and responsibilities.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A relevant degree in Safety, Health, and Environment or Geography and Environmental Studies/Science.
  • At least one year of working experience in the SHE field, preferably in a university or educational institution.
  • Proficiency in computer applications relevant to safety management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Strong attention to detail and analytical abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
