Job Description

Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is the official international humanitarian agency of the Catholic community in the United States of America. CRS works to save, protect, and transform lives in need in more than 100 countries, without regard to race, religion, or nationality.

Registered in Zimbabwe under the PVO Act, certificate number 6/2002, CRS has been supporting program activities in Zimbabwe since 1989, with long-standing relationships with Church and non-Church partners and communities throughout the country. CRS implements projects through 14 partner organizations in 30 districts, focusing on areas such as health, OVC, education, food security and agricultural livelihoods, and peacebuilding.

Catholic Relief Services is looking for a dedicated and experienced Livelihoods & Environment Officer to join the organisation’s dynamic team in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. As the Livelihoods & Environment Officer, you will play a crucial role in implementing agricultural livelihoods programs, ensuring adherence to program quality principles and standards, donor guidelines, and industry best practices.

Your technical expertise and leadership will contribute to the delivery of high-quality programming, while collaborating with partners and communities to design, monitor, and evaluate interventions in the field of food security and livelihoods.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the Program Manager in achieving project objectives and targets.
  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders, including government officials and implementing partners, to conduct capacity strengthening activities and documentation at various levels.
  • Foster productive working relations with government line Ministries, private sector institutions, research institutions, and local and international partners, ensuring the adoption and uptake of innovative approaches in agriculture development, climate-resilient agriculture, and sustainable soil and land management.
  • Engage in a collaborative approach to review development plans, identify and prioritize assets requiring restoration.
  • Assist the local partner in engaging the community, developing work norms, and creating an inclusive environment for Food For Assets interventions.
  • Strengthen the capacity of local institutions in implementing and monitoring their development plans.
  • Conduct field visits to partner project sites, gathering feedback from partners and communities, addressing queries promptly, and providing timely technical assistance.
  • Guide the design and implementation of land restoration initiatives, fostering shared values with key stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the compilation of monthly/quarterly partner and CRS reports or data information sheets.
  • Participate in the development of knowledge products.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture specializing in Agronomy, Environmental Sciences, Livestock Management, Animal Husbandry, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience working on programs funded by USAID, EU, or FCDO (preferred).
  • Proven experience in using participatory approaches.
  • Demonstrable capacity to establish and maintain strong, collaborative working relationships with donors, government officials, local organizations, communities, and other stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures governing natural resource management.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in both English and the appropriate local language (preferred) with the ability to develop IEC materials.
  • Proficiency in using MS Windows and MS Office packages (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work independently, in teams, and represent CRS effectively.
