Job Description

The Avenues Clinic is a Grade A multidisciplinary hospital based in Harare, Zimbabwe. Established in 1983, it is the flagship facility for the MIL group.

The hospital offers a wide range of specialist services, outstanding nursing care, and a patient-centric approach. With a total of 176 beds, The Avenues Clinic operates as a one-stop medical hub, providing comprehensive healthcare services. It is located at Corner Baines and Josiah Chinamano Avenue in Harare.

The Avenues Clinic is seeking a highly skilled Laboratory Scientist (Microbiologist) to join their dynamic team. As a Laboratory Scientist, you will be responsible for conducting high-quality, routine, and specialized laboratory testing services. Your accurate and timely clinical results will be crucial for patient diagnosis, treatment, and management.

The role requires expertise in microbiology and a commitment to producing reliable results that contribute to the overall quality of patient care. Competitive remuneration and incentives are offered for this position.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Process samples in the Microbiology department following Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Verify and match patient credentials on request forms with received samples.
  • Prepare culture media and manage inventory accordingly.
  • Perform sample processing in other departments based on work schedule requirements.
  • Record received samples, assess sample integrity, and allocate them to appropriate departments.
  • Perform calibration and quality control procedures before analyzing samples, reviewing and troubleshooting as necessary.
  • Conduct confirmatory tests based on preliminary results and prioritize critical tests and samples according to urgency.
  • Evaluate result validity using reference ranges, clinical data, and patient history.
  • Enter, review, and save results in the laboratory information systems.
  • Check, authorize, sign off, and dispatch results to relevant clinicians.
  • Communicate panic or critical results promptly to the appropriate medical professionals.
  • Conduct daily internal quality control and periodic external quality assurance control tests to maintain accurate results and laboratory accreditation.
  • Perform scheduled equipment maintenance following manufacturer specifications and recommendations.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • BSC Honours in Medical Laboratory Science.
  • Extensive trackable experience in Microbiology or a Master of Science degree in Medical Microbiology (preferred).
  • Knowledge and training in SLMTA, SLIPTA, 1SO 15189:2012, and revised version ISO15189:2022 (advantageous).
  • Advanced knowledge and hands-on experience with automated analyzers (advantageous).
  • Proficient computer skills, including technical writing for data summaries and reports.
  • Proven critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work under pressure.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ working experience in Microbiology.
  • Excellent organizational, prioritization, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.
  • Flexibility in working hours, including weekends and after-hours availability.
